Rider rules

Rules of Engagement

All riders must read, adhere to and agree to these rules before entering Black & White Gravel & MTB 2026.

Slaney Cycling Club · Sunday 11 October 2026

The course

This is an off-road event and as such carries some inherent risks, as with any event of its type. It is up to the riders themselves to deem themselves fit enough to handle the course and technically adept enough to handle the conditions and terrain.

Self-supported

The event is self-supported and although covering a relatively small range of mountain there will be times when you are away from the conveniences of main roads and amenities. For this reason all riders are expected to carry a fully charged phone and have the organisers’ number easily at hand in the event of an incident. The emergency numbers will be given on the day of the event and in the days leading up to it.

The rider should be adept at a basic level of bike maintenance such as puncture repair, brake or gear cable replacement and other such on-the-route maintenance hacks.

Riders should bring enough nutrition to get them through the event. While there will be a water stop roughly 30 km in, it is up to the rider to carry sufficient food for their level of endurance.

Cycling Ireland

Riders of the Event must be members of Cycling Ireland. Riders who are not members of Cycling Ireland will be required to purchase a one-day licence.

Sharing the route

The event follows public roads, walkways and routes that are open to pedestrians and vehicles. It is the responsibility of the riders to safely share the route (off-road and on-road). Riders should be prepared for vehicles at all times and understand that all roads are fully open to traffic, and should be respectful to anyone you meet.

The event organisers will publish a GPX file in the run-up to the event and the route will be marshalled and way-marked, but it is the ultimate responsibility of the rider to maintain a knowledge of their surroundings so as to regain position should they go off route.

A small portion of the route will be two-way and as such please keep an eye on signage and adhere to the Keep Left and Keep Right markings.

A portion of the route is aimed at technical mountain bike riding and there will be a “chicken run” for gravel bikes or people wanting a simpler route. Please be sensible in your choice.

Private land

A portion of the route will be run over private land. For this reason, we will not publish the final routes until the week of the event. Riders are forbidden from riding on private land leading up to and following the Event. Access to private land is ONLY for the day of the Event. If any riders do a recon of the route prior to, or after, the Event, do not enter private land by bike, on foot, or by vehicle. Any participating rider found to violate this rule will be eliminated from the Event with no exceptions and with no refund. We cannot stress this rule enough.

Photography

There may be photographers at the start, finish and on the course. Riders agree and accept to have their images captured and that those images may be utilised by the Event organisers for promotional, media, and/or press purposes.

Leave No Trace

Most importantly — this is our natural local area. Adhere to the Leave No Trace initiative and bring home what you bring out. Leave nothing but your sweat and tears on the course and above all — have a great and safe day out.
